Home hockey pitch with artificial grass2

We wanted to take the opportunity to showcase one of our more unusual projects – a home hockey pitch. Although we’ve installed and resurfaced many hockey pitches over the years, we haven’t built many in private homes. Particularly special for us, this was a fantastic chance to scale down our sports pitch design and transform a garden into a beautiful and useful space, this was one project we were especially excited to take on.

The challenge

The location of the installation was a newly built house in Comberton. While building the property, the owners decided to finish their garden off with a specially laid artificial lawn, making the feature even more useful by allocating an area of the space to be used as a hockey pitch for their daughters. As their children played to a high standard, the pitch needed to be suitable for heavy use and serious play. The benefits of an artificial lawn is that it requires very little maintenance, most importantly it provides a durable and long lasting space.

The surface

As SFM Magazine says, “because of the very nature of the game of field hockey, the quality of the playing surface has a tremendous impact – for better or worse – on play”. So in order to ensure the finished pitch was as good as can be, we chose to use our high quality Kings Artificial Grass. As well as giving the pitch a smooth, even surface, this type of grass provides a natural finish, ensuring the lawn looks as good as it plays.

Underneath the artificial grass we installed a consolidated 150ml dynamic base with a SD25 shock pad, finishing it off with a Tigerturf Evo Pro sports grass. Perfect for aspiring professionals, this high end surface will look and feel great for years.

The result

The owners of the house were extremely pleased with the finished result. The smooth transition between the ornamental area of the lawn and the playing surface gave the garden a unified aesthetic, while added landscaping helped the artificial surface to blend seamlessly into the overall design, which is always an important factor in undertaking any project of this kind. The perfect result for families who like to make the most of their outside space, this dual purpose garden will keep both the parents and kids happy for years to come.

tennis court with artificial grass

Having access to your very own private court is not only great for your racquet skills, it’s also a fantastic way to entertain friends and family, stay fit and get some fresh air.

We recently had the opportunity to work on one family’s very impressive tennis court. Located within the private grounds of Woburn Abbey, the sand-filled court was in dire need of an overhaul to bring it up to scratch and make it playable.

The problem

Woburn Abbey is one of the most beautiful stately homes in the country. Located close to Milton Keynes, it’s visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. Within the Abbey grounds are a number of private areas set aside for the exclusive use of the family. This is where the estate’s 15-year old sand-filled tennis court is located.

For many years, the tennis court had been poorly maintained by another contractor. By the time we were called in, the facility was in a fairly bad state of repair. Algae and moss contamination had made the court virtually unplayable, while the lack of good quality maintenance had severely impacted on the appearance of the court.

Rejuvination

The first thing we had to do was mechanically remove all of the debris that had built up on the court over the years. All of the infill in the court was sifted and filtered, and all of the contaminated material was then removed from the site. The edges of the tennis court were meticulously weeded and all moss was eliminated. The entire surface was then treated with AlgoClear Pro, a highly effective chemical treatment used by our professional contractors.

The result

Once all the work had been completed, the results were truly impressive. The tennis court is now free of contaminates and debris, the original rich green colour has been restored and the lines are once more crisp, white and bright. The court now offers an excellent surface for playing and fits in perfectly with the rest of the beautifully maintained gardens in Woburn Abbey.

Artificial grass home golf course2

Unless you are lucky enough to live next to a course – or have a few acres to spare in the back garden – this is one sport that is not always easy to practice at home. However, this didn’t deter a homeowner from Cambridge, who decided to build a personal golf green for her husband. Unique, imaginative and extremely useful, this domestic golf green has transformed the garden of this private home, giving both the husband and wife a space they can enjoy in the process.

The challenge

After struggling to think of a suitable birthday present for her golf-loving husband, the client decided to build him his very own golf green in the back garden. As the green needed to be perfectly neat and manicured throughout the year – and to avoid muddy patches, wear and tear – the homeowners opted to install an artificial surface, instead of natural grass. As well as being a great surface to play on come rain or shine, this artificial turf will look fantastic no matter what the weather throws at it.

Installation

The first step in building this personal golf course was to lay a 100mm layer of Type 1 stone together, with a 50mm layer of granite chippings. This firm surface would give the green a smooth, even appearance and flat playing surface, two things that are essential for any golf course. Once the base layer was complete, we laid Evo Pro Sports Grass on the surface, completing the manicured look. Longer pile grass was added to the ‘rough’ surrounding the green, to give the course a more realistic look. Extra holes and flags can be added to the course if the homeowners want to alter the set up.

The result

Both clients were extremely pleased with the finished result. Not only is the miniature golf course a gift that will keep on giving, but the installation of the green has transformed their outside space and given them a garden they can really enjoy.

Dog agility area with artificial grass

Established since 1991, Waterlow kennels are Set in 5.5 acres of Norfolk countryside. The owners visited our showroom wondering if artificial grass would be an option. Although our shorter pile Kings and Queens grass would've been adequate, the option of a shorter pile sports grass was preferred. TigerTurf® Evo Pro grass is a short curly pile grass ideal for sports such as cricket, tennis and hockey. It allows fast movement without being slippery, ideal for quick moving dogs.

Process

The entire floor area of over 200m2 was firstly cleared, the rubber matting removed and cleaned and underlay disposed of. The area was levelled and any large lumps removed from the road planing sub base.

An edge was created to pin or glue the grass to around the perimeter and around the central posts. All concrete central posts were ‘made good’ as they had begun to show signs of wear.

12 tonnes of Granno chippings (6mm to dust) were added to level out the surface and then compacted. The entire area was hand screeded to form a nice even, flat surface. The cleaned rubber matting was then re-laid onto the new base.

TigerTurf®Evo Pro grass was then installed, seams were joined and the edges either glued or nailed. The entire area was then dressed with a kiln dried silica sand.

The result

The owners liked the clean new look of the grass so much they requested other parts of the agility area that were open to the public to be covered with Kings artificial grass. Some of the apparatus was also covered in the longer Kings grass which proved to be very popular with the dogs. The owners were thrilled with the work that was undertaken in a week, they now have a safe clean area where they do both dog agility activities but show their beautiful dogs.
