Case study: Cambridge roof garden

22/2/2017

According to @CambridgeNewsUK, “Cambridge has topped a list of property hotspots where asking prices have exploded by 75 per cent in just a decade.” As a result, property across the area is now in exceptionally high demand, with city centre homes attracting the highest premiums. This has lead to a lot of homeowners in prime Cambridgeshire locations improving and adding value to their properties rather than moving home, enhancing the city centre and creating some spectacular properties in the process.

The brief

One such household recently approached us for help renovating their outside space. Their exclusive central Cambridge penthouse boasted a private roof terrace, but the area was tired, dull, and didn’t do the stunning property justice. The homeowners wanted to add colour to their roof garden, give it a more stylish aesthetic, and create a softer feel underfoot. Our clients hoped that by making these alterations that they’d transform this little used space into a usable part of their property, enhancing the look and the value of their home at the same time.

The work

The roof space already had asphalt in place. As this provides a waterproof covering for the roof - removing it wasn’t an option; so instead, we simply installed a shock pad under the artificial grass to minimise any lumps and bumps in the asphalt surface and to give the finished lawn a soft, luxurious feel. As access to the site was only available via a service lift, all of the materials, including the artificial grass and the shock pad, had to be cut at our depot and carried by hand through the apartment.

The result

The artificial grass that we installed in this central Cambridge penthouse completely transformed the outside space. Adding colour, style and usability to the roof garden, it gave the homeowners an area they could really enjoy while they took in panoramic views of Cambridge city centre. As homeowner Mrs Carmichael puts it, “I always wanted to be able to sit out on our terrace with a glass of wine and look across this wonderful historic city skyline. However previously the area was so uninviting. Now I’m going to host parties up here.”

Projects like this show just how much of a difference artificial grass can make to city centre homes and apartments.
