Case study: A dramatic transformation of a dysfunctional garden

15/3/2017

One of the best things about artificial grass is that it makes problem gardens much more usable. Transforming dark, damp, and awkwardly shaped gardens, yards and balconies into bright, practical spaces - artificial grass can help to give homeowners the usability they really want from their outside space. What’s more, as Gardenista says, “Artificial grass has been gaining ground–and a reputation for being eco-friendly because it doesn’t need water, fertilizer, or to be mowed. Plus, the newest generation of artificial grass often looks good enough to fool us into thinking it’s real.”

We recently worked with a client who wanted to take advantage of both the aesthetic and the practical benefits of artificial grass. With a difficult existing surface to work with and personal challenges to face, they wanted a garden that was safe, easy to look after and that looked great throughout the year.

The brief

The owners of the property in Wisbech got in touch with us after they purchased the home and realised that the existing stone slabs were slippery and dangerous when wet. Covered in leaves and moss, the surface posed a real danger to the homeowner who suffered from poor eyesight and ill health. The owner’s grandchildren were also afraid to venture out into the garden in case they fell on the uneven surface.

The Installation

Though originally the owners simply wanted the slabs replaced with artificial grass - once we got to work, we saw there was a lot more we could do to improve the space and make it more usable. We began by clearing overgrown areas of the garden, laying weed membranes to keep it clear, and putting down gravel to create a cleaner, more attractive appearance. We also laid decorative paddled stone and put down a sloping path next to the house to improve accessibility. The client chose our natural looking King’s Grass and the entire installation took just four days. We even managed to build a den for the grandchildren out of leftover tree branches.

The result

This job was one of the most dramatic transformations we’ve ever been involved with. The end result was truly spectacular, providing the homeowners with a space they could really enjoy and ensuring the garden was safe for everyone to use. To put it in the client’s own words, “We can honestly say you have made us realize that there are some really lovely genuine people around. Rob and the guys have proved that, it’s been an absolute pleasure to meet you all!!!!!! We would love you to come and perhaps have afternoon tea on the lawn, now wouldn’t that be amazing?!! You have not only transformed our garden but our life! Thank you.” Mrs Swain, Wisbech.
